Greyhounds really do make fantastic pets and at the end of their racing careers, all of our athletes go on to find loving homes.
As breeds of dog go, you cannot get much more laid back than a greyhound, as anyone who has ever rehomed a retired greyhound will testify. They require very little maintenance, and although it is commonly misconceived that greyhounds require a lot of exercise, usually two to three short walks per day is more than enough to satisfy their needs. They haven’t gained their nickname of “40 mph couch potatoes” for nothing!
Due to the routine that a greyhound has whilst racing, whether they are at at the kennels or racing at the track, they are often handled by people, and so are used to human contact. This not only makes them great whilst walking out on the lead for example, but also makes it easier for them to settle into a family of people.
Not only this, greyhounds also have an incredible ability to adapt quickly from the fast-paced environment of a racing kennel to home life, and often can go on to live with other breeds of dogs and even cats! They are a very social breed, and so although there may be some initial excitement and curiosity upon introduction to new breeds, it is best to be patient, as it is probably their first experience with a breed other than greyhound. Once they are over this, it is unlikely that any problems should be encountered, as many greyhounds are kennelled up in pairs and enjoy each others company.
It is important to remember that every greyhound is unique, they all have their own special characters, and some may adapt to their new surroundings quicker than others. Being patient is key, but once a greyhound settles into your home and becomes part of your life, it is very hard to imagine life without one.
Our greyhounds all come with a proud racing history, and we work and have good relationships with numerous greyhound rehoming centres in the local area and elsewhere in the UK. If you think you can provide one of our amazing athletes with a forever loving home, be sure to contact a branch near you (details of which can be found below) and they will endeavour to find you your new best friend!
